The main site I use if Beatport. They have a good genre split, with charts that are updated every Friday. They also add DJ top 10s on an ongoing basis.

The files are legal and I know people who have used it for over five years.

Albums are about 1 Euro and you get a bunch of bonus downloads with a deposit.
Individual songs as little as 10cents.

The indexing of songs is a little awkward, but the search was OK and I always found what I was looking for.
The catalogue of music is reasonable enough if you are looking for a bit of cheap inspiration, plenty of unusual stuff and mainstream.
Not a great site for dance music, nevermind the many spin off genres.
The songs vary in bitrate, no wave option.
No DRM.
Song tags were a bit shaky on occassion with last.fm scrobbling.
