Controlling volume of external midi device from APC40 fader

How do I get the APC40 track fader to control (ie ...to fade up and down) the volume or overall velocity of a midi tracking which is routed to an external hardware midi device?
All the other functions of the APC40's track work to control Ableton (clip launch, stop, activator, solo, arm) ... so why not the volume fader?
